Teacher Application is Coming!

November 7, 2008

I know!  You just can’t wait any longer!!!

I ask for your patience anyway.  We have rebuilt the online teacher application from the ground up, making it simpler to use, more informative, and, dare I say, prettier as well.  We’re bug testing right now to make sure it’s on its game when we launch.

We plan on going live before December 1.  In the meantime, prepare by following the ups and downs of our 2008 teachers and by reading the 2009 Teaching at Breakthrough Handbook (this is REQUIRED).  When that does not sate your need for Breakthrough experiences, head on over to our Facebook page and join the discussion.

Welcome to the Breakthrough Movement

June 9, 2008

(The letter below has been sent to all teachers confirmed to teach this summer.  If you are a confirmed teacher and did not receive this e-mail, let your director know!)

6/6/2008

Dear Breakthrough Teacher,

Work hard.  Teach with joy.  Accept nothing but excellence.

First things first.  Breakthrough pushes bright students academically to put them on a path to college.  Breakthrough does that with relentlessly rigorous academics and thoughtful, serious mentoring from committed high school and college students from great schools.  In the most basic terms, you’re preparing your students to excel in the same great schools that you’re attending.

Why do our students need Breakthrough?  Because study after study has shown that smarts and ambition don’t automatically equal educational success, that bright kids who don’t get the support they need in 7th grade (challenging classes, thoughtful extra-curriculars, and tutoring for trouble areas) aren’t going to qualify for the honors-track classes in 9th grade.  We help students bridge that gap.

At the same time, it is a fact that young adolescents need older adolescents to mentor and guide them to be all that they can be.  This is a part of their development.  Your students this summer will listen to you, they will want to emulate your success, they will want to go to your fabulous high schools and colleges simply because you tell them that is where they belong.  You may be the first person to ever articulate this to them.  You probably will never truly learn how important you will become in their young lives, and in the development of their understanding of the world.  Breakthrough is as much about mentoring young students to become leaders as it is about academic excellence and building skills so students may enter and thrive in the best schools in this country.  When all is said and done, this is a program about relationships.

That is what we do, and why Breakthrough was founded (as Summerbridge) 30 years ago.  It’s also why we’ve since grown to 34 sites in 29 cities.  It’s actually very simple.  Now for your part:

Work hard.  Teach with joy.  Accept nothing but excellence.

Now that all is said and done… applicant #1,000

March 13, 2008

Last Monday marked the end of Breakthrough’s application period for summer 2008–and what an application period it was. Our final count totaled over 1,300, due in large part to hundreds of applications we received in the final weekend. Among those applications was the young woman who graciously took our applicant figure from three digits to four: Caryn Jack. As lucky number 1,000, Caryn will receive a Breakthrough Nalgene and our best wishes for future application processes in which she has the chance of being #1,000. Without further ado…

Meet Breakthrough’s 100th Applicant!

January 10, 2008

The Celebration of the Number 100 continues tonight here at TeachBreakthroughs. Please meet Pei (Sally) Wu, the 100th superstar to apply to teach this summer for Breakthrough:

Name: Pei (Sally) Wu
School: Haverford College (Class of 2011)
Major: Undeclared (Education, Psychology or Chemistry)
Time of Submission: Thursday, January 10, 4:28 PM PST

1. How did you first hear about Breakthrough?

I was searching for a summer program that would allow me to teach and work with children. I found Breakthrough on a list of programs for minority undergraduates. I was wondering whether to apply for it or not, since it seems to be such a tough program to get into. It just so happen that I found out that Rachel [Cholst, BTNY '06-'07] had done the program. After talking to her and finding out she was a campus recruiter, I was convinced to apply. She has been really generous with helping me by encouraging me to keep going throughout my application process.

2. What about teaching with Breakthrough is so exciting for you?

I think the great thing about Breakthrough is the amount of freedom given to the
teachers and the amount of interaction that the teachers will have with the
students. Plus, it gives undergraduates a chance to teach students and
find out if teaching is right for them.

3. What are some of your career interests?

I want to get involved with children in the future, either through a job or
through volunteer work. I am thinking about pursuing developmental
psychology or education as a major.

I have always been inclined towards math and science. I have liked
all of my math and science teachers and learned a lot, but I have found that
there are so many ways to teach it and not enough teachers are able to go
outside of the box to teach it. I want to attempt more progressive methods
in teaching math and science. I think the best thing I can do for the
students is to simply love what I am teaching. I love the concepts of math
and science and I would love to help my students understand the concepts for
themselves. I think that teaching these topics will be more difficult than
teaching history or english, but I would much rather teach something I love and
something that I feel more comfortable with.

4. Describe your personality in three words.

Happy, Dreamy, Reliable

5. If you were a U.S. city, what city would you be, and why?

This is a tough one. I haven’t been to many cities and I don’t quite
feel I am like any of the cities I have been too. I think I would be more
of a suburb, where it is more about the community and the simple things in life
rather than the hustle and bustle of the city.

Sally will be receiving a lovely Breakthrough Nalgene bottle for her effort/luck. Congrats!

IMPT Note: While Sally is celebrated as our 100th applicant, her selection or
non-selection is totally up to the site(s) she applied to, and this has no
bearing on such. We do wish her luck, though.

ANTHR IMPT Note: We’re not stopping at 100. Our 250th, 500th, and 1000th applicants will also be Celebrated. We’re having a great application season so far, and we’re currently on track to receive approximately 1500 summer teaching applications this year. It’s kind of like those radio contests where the 10th caller gets the concert tickets. Please get your applications in, and send your friends/relations/etc. to the application right away!

THRD IMPT Note: The Facebook savvy can visit the new page for this summer here: Teach Summer 2008. Become a fan! Post to your profile! Send encouraging notes to applicants!

Teacher Application: Tell Your Friends

January 7, 2008

As you well know, we are currently accepting applications to teach summer 2008.

The application is live, and you are our best ambassadors. Tell your cousins, friends, neighbors, siblings, worst-enemy-that-you-respect-nonetheless-for-their-sincerity-though-you-disagree-on-certain-key-issues, etc. We are serious about always strengthening our teacher corps, and you know who in your Facebook Friend list/T-Mobile 5/Slam Poetry Team belongs with Breakthrough.

Send them a note, give them a call, and send them to http://www.breakthroughcollaborative.org/apply/

That is all. Go about your day.

Bobby
